About SIROS

A more human, open, and secure digital identity for the world.

Our mission

SIROS Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Stockholm, founded in February 2025 with a simple but ambitious goal;

To build the next generation of digital identity for the Internet: open, privacy-preserving, portable, and accessible to all.

We believe digital identity should empower people, not control them. It should be safe, easy to use, and work across borders and platforms, just like the Internet itself.

Our approach ensures that identity stays in the hands of the user, encrypted end-to-end with no backdoors and no data collection.

What we do

SIROS develops and maintains open standards, open-source tools, and public-interest infrastructure that make secure digital identity possible at global scale.

At the center of our work is wwWallet, an open-source digital identity wallet built with:

  • FIDO Passkeys for the strongest possible authentication

  • OpenID and ISO/IEC 18013-5 for interoperable credential exchange

  • EUDI/eIDAS 2.0 alignment for cross-border use in Europe and beyond

  • A web-first architecture that works without apps or proprietary platforms

Why SIROS Exists

Digital identity today is fragmented, inconsistent, and often privacy-invasive. Many solutions depend on closed ecosystems or centralized control.

The majority of all cybercrime is due to stolen and misused login credentials, and proprietary solutions risk locking organizations into closed systems.

We are building an alternative grounded in four principles:

  1. Open Standards - Identity infrastructure must be based on global, transparent standards — not proprietary lock-in.

  2. Privacy by Design - Users should decide what they share, when they share it, and with whom.

  3. Security First - Using FIDO Passkeys, hardware-backed cryptography, and end-to-end encryption, SIROS aims to meet the highest assurance levels (including future eIDAS High).

  4. Portability & Interoperability - Identity should work wherever you are, on any device, across borders and services. If you can access a browser, you can access your SIROS wallet.

Our Technology Approach

SIROS takes an Internet-first approach to digital identity:

  • Progressive Web Application (PWA) for maximum reach

  • Native apps for advanced use cases

  • Non-web clients for Agentic AI

  • No accounts required: no emails, passwords, or personal information stored

  • Encrypted data portability powered by the WebAuthn PRF extension

  • Support for multiple credential formats (SD-JWT, mdoc, JWP, BBS signatures, ZKPs)

  • Roadmap for post-quantum cryptography and hardware-backed proof keys

This lets governments, enterprises, developers, and individuals adopt secure digital identity with minimal cost and friction.

Our Story & Origins

SIROS grew out of an international collaboration between GUnet, Sunet, and Yubico to build wwWallet under EU large-scale pilot projects (DC4EU and EWC).

The project is supported by these main contributors and financial support from the EU Commission. To ensure long-term sustainability and independence, the SIROS Foundation is funded by voluntary donations from our team members and operates as a neutral non-profit.

Our Name & Vision

SIROS stands for Secure Identity Research Organisations, and is inspired by Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Just as Sirius has guided travellers for thousands of years, SIROS aims to guide people safely through their digital lives: with clarity, trust, and independence

  • Across devices

  • Across borders

  • Without surveillance

  • Without proprietary lock-in

  • Under the user’s full control

Digital identity should feel as natural and safe as using your wallet, but infinitely smarter, more secure, and built for the age of the Internet.
