About
Registered as a Swedish nonprofit organization in February 2025, the Secure Identity Research Organizations (SIROS) Foundation mission is to create a next-generation digital identity platform for the internet. Our name is inspired by Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky – a symbol of guidance for users navigating the digital world. Our open-source foundation is built on the wwWallet, an internet-first digital identity wallet.
.
We believe identity infrastructure should be:
Open – grounded in transparent standards and open source.
Portable – usable across platforms, borders, and communities.
Trustworthy – designed from the start with privacy and security in mind.
Our role is to accelerate adoption of tools and standards that make digital identity practical at scale. We work with governments, enterprises, and developers to prove that identity can be both usable and interoperable, without being controlled by a single provider.

Why now?
Digital identity is at a crossroads. The majority of all cybercrime is due to stolen and misused login credentials and identities. The majority of all online identities are not real humans, seriously challenging our digital society and trust in the internet. Proprietary solutions are moving quickly, but they risk locking people and organizations into closed systems. SIROS offers another way: an open path forward that prioritizes collaboration, user privacy, and accountability. We are confident in the foundation we are building, and we remain open to input as the challenges — and opportunities — continue to grow.
Funding
The wwWallet open-source project is funded in part by main contributors, including Sunet, GUnet, SURF, Yubico, and the SIROS Foundation, as well as financial support from the EU Commission. The SIROS Foundation is funded by voluntary donations from our team members. For long-term sustainability and independence of our non-profit organization, we are building SIROS ID as a freemium value-added solution.
